New Delhi eyes record defence spending boost amid regional security concerns and Pakistan’s military resilience

Key Takeaways:
1. India is poised to increase its defence budget by Rs 50,000 crore following a military setback against Pakistan.
2. The new total defence spending could exceed Rs 7 lakh crore, marking a historic peak in India’s military expenditure.
3. The budget increase aims to enhance R&D, weapon procurement, and ammunition stockpiling, raising concerns about regional security dynamics.

Money Matters Monitoring – India is reportedly considering a significant increase of Rs 50,000 crore in its defence budget after facing a military setback against Pakistan, according to Indian media reports. This proposed boost, if approved, would push India’s total defence expenditure beyond Rs 7 lakh crore for the first time, marking a new high in its military spending.
The additional funds are expected to be allocated through a supplementary budget during the upcoming Winter Session of the Indian Parliament. The original defence budget for the fiscal year 2025–26, announced by Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in February, already set a record at Rs 6.81 lakh crore, a 9.2 percent increase over the previous year’s Rs 6.22 lakh crore.
Sources indicate that the extra allocation will target research and development, procurement of advanced weaponry, replenishment of ammunition, and acquisition of modern military hardware. Defence analysts have expressed concerns that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aggressive military expansion risks destabilizing the regional security balance in South Asia.
Since Modi’s government came to power in 2014, India’s defence spending has steadily increased, reflecting a strategic focus on military buildup. However, Pakistan’s recent military resilience and operational successes have reportedly prompted New Delhi to reconsider and reinforce its defence budget.
