Key Takeaways:

– FPCCI plans to file a petition in the Supreme Court against IPP agreements.

– High electricity costs are driving citizens into poverty and businesses to bankruptcy.

– Former Interim Commerce Minister Dr. Gohar Ejaz stresses the need to eliminate mismanagement for Pakistan’s prosperity.

Petition Against Power Producer Agreements

Former Interim Commerce Minister Dr. Gohar Ejaz has announced that the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) will seek the Supreme Court’s intervention regarding agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPP). The FPCCI, representing the business community, intends to file a formal petition challenging these agreements, which Ejaz describes as a critical issue affecting the livelihood of every Pakistani.

Intolerable Electricity Costs

In a tweet, Ejaz highlighted the financial burden imposed by the current IPP agreements, stating that Pakistan pays billions of rupees to companies that fail to generate electricity. He underscored the dire consequences of high electricity costs, which are pushing citizens into poverty and leading businesses towards bankruptcy.

2020 Report on Energy Sector Losses

Ejaz referenced a detailed 2020 report by former Interim Energy Minister Muhammad Ali, which revealed losses amounting to hundreds of billions due to government mismanagement and IPP misrepresentations. He questioned why the report’s recommendations, including a forensic audit, had not been fully implemented.

Ejaz warned that Pakistan cannot afford to repeat past mistakes, which have allowed certain investors to profit without contributing to the country’s development. He called for decisive action to ensure that such situations do not recur.

Call for Government Action

Ejaz urged the government to prioritize the survival of Pakistan’s 240 million citizens over the guaranteed profits of a few families. He emphasized that Pakistan, with its rich resources, must address mismanagement to achieve prosperity. The cost of electricity is a critical issue for Pakistan’s industries and has a direct impact on the population.

Warning Against Repeated Mistakes

Concluding his statement, Ejaz warned that Pakistan cannot afford to repeat past mistakes, which have allowed certain investors to profit without contributing to the country’s development. He called for decisive action to ensure that such situations do not recur.
