Move expected to further strain already frozen trade relations between Pakistan and India.

Key Takeaways:

i) Pakistan has banned the transit trade of Indian-origin goods, impacting imports and exports.

ii) The decision was made amidst rising tensions between Pakistan and India.

iii) The ban is expected to disrupt regional trade routes.

Islamabad, Pakistan – Amid escalating tensions, Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce has announced a ban on the transit trade of goods originating from India. This decision prohibits the import and export of goods to and from India through Pakistan, irrespective of whether these goods are routed via third countries.

The ban encompasses goods imported by third countries from India that transit through Pakistan, as well as exports from third countries to India that are routed through Pakistan. While consignments already in process are exempt from this ban, the move is anticipated to exacerbate the already strained trade relations between Pakistan and India, which have been largely frozen since 2019.

This development has raised concerns about potential disruptions to regional trade routes, as Pakistan serves as a crucial transit corridor for goods moving between India and Afghanistan, as well as Central Asia. The long-term economic implications of this ban remain to be seen, but it is expected to add further complexity to the already challenging geopolitical landscape in the region.
