  • Domestic consumers using up to 200 units are exempt from the hike for three months.
  • Tariff increases range from Rs 6.12 to Rs 7.12 per unit, depending on usage.

Nationwide Impact on Households

The federal government has announced a substantial increase in the basic electricity tariff, a move that will affect households across the country. The adjustment, effective immediately, sees tariffs rise by Rs 7 to Rs 12 per unit based on usage levels.

Details of the Tariff Increase

According to the Power Division’s notification, domestic consumers who use up to 200 units per month will be exempt from this increase for the next three months. For all other domestic consumers, the basic electricity tariff will increase by Rs 7.12 per unit. This change sets the new basic electricity tariff for domestic consumers at Rs 48.84 per unit.

Consumers using between 201 and 300 units per month will see their rates rise by Rs 7.12, bringing the new rate to Rs 34.26 per unit. Those consuming between 301 and 400 units will experience a Rs 7.02 increase, resulting in a new rate of Rs 39.15 per unit. Lastly, for consumers using between 401 and 500 units, the tariff will go up by Rs 6.12, setting the new rate at Rs 41.36 per unit.

Justification and Public Concern

The government has justified this tariff hike as necessary to manage the increasing costs of electricity production and distribution. Despite this, the decision has raised concerns among citizens, who are already facing high living costs.
